You’ve been watching your toddler carefully — comparing their progress to other kids at playgroup or what the parenting books say. Maybe they’re not talking as much as their peers. Maybe they struggle to hold a crayon or climb stairs. Or maybe they seem checked out during social interactions, off in their own world while other children engage.
That worry doesn’t shut off at bedtime. It follows you.
Here’s the thing: developmental delays tend to snowball when nobody addresses them. The first few years of life are windows where the brain is most receptive to intervention. Kids who miss key milestones during this stretch often face uphill battles with school readiness, friendships, and long-term learning.
At GPS Counseling, we provide thorough early intervention programs in Modesto built to catch developmental delays early and give your child the specialized support they need. Our multidisciplinary team works alongside your family — not apart from it — creating individualized treatment plans for speech delays, motor skill challenges, social-emotional concerns, or cognitive development. Whatever your child needs, we build around that.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Schedule a consultation with GPS Counseling and let’s talk about your child’s development in a supportive, judgment-free space. Call us at (209) 758-7477 to get started.
Early intervention programs provide specialized therapeutic and developmental support for infants, toddlers, and children with developmental delays or disabilities, helping them reach their full potential during the growth periods that matter most. These programs rely on evidence-based therapies delivered by trained specialists to address delays before they grow into bigger problems.
California’s Early Start program specifically serves children birth to age 3. We go broader — birth through age 21. Eligibility comes down to whether your child shows a developmental delay or has a diagnosed condition likely to result in one.
We work with kids experiencing delays across every developmental domain. Speech and language delays might look like late talking, trouble understanding instructions, or articulation challenges. Motor delays can mean difficulty with walking and running (gross motor) or grasping objects (fine motor). Cognitive delays affect learning, problem-solving, and memory. Social-emotional delays? Those show up as trouble interacting with others, managing emotions, or forming attachments.
Our team conducts full developmental screenings to figure out where your child stands. If they qualify for Early Start, we help you through that system. If they don’t meet state criteria but still need support, we offer services through insurance or private pay.
Our assessment process starts with an initial consultation — we listen to your concerns, learn your child’s developmental history, and run preliminary screenings to see if a full evaluation makes sense. This family-centered approach means you’re an active partner from day one. Not a bystander.
During that first visit, we get to know your child and your family. We ask about milestones they’ve hit, what’s worrying you, and what matters most to your family. We watch your child play and use age-appropriate screening tools to sketch an initial developmental picture.
When screening points toward a full evaluation, our multidisciplinary team digs deeper across all developmental areas — standardized tools, naturalistic observation, parent interviews. The whole picture. Then we sit down with you, explain the results in plain language, and build an Individualized Service Plan covering your child’s strengths, areas of need, specific goals, and recommended services.
We offer a full range of therapeutic services delivered by licensed specialists who genuinely understand child development and use evidence-based strategies. Because our approach is multidisciplinary, your child gets coordinated care from professionals who actually talk to each other and work toward shared goals.
Our early intervention team includes speech-language pathologists with expertise in early communication, occupational therapists trained in sensory integration and fine motor skills, physical therapists specializing in infant and child movement, developmental therapists addressing cognitive and adaptive skills, and behavioral health professionals supporting social-emotional growth.
Speech-language therapy tackles communication delays — receptive and expressive language, articulation, social communication, feeding difficulties. Occupational therapy zeroes in on fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, and play. Physical therapy builds strength, coordination, balance, and gross motor abilities. Developmental therapy targets cognitive skills, problem-solving, and age-appropriate milestones.
Research shows that early intervention works best when families are actively involved. We coach you to support your child’s development through daily routines and activities — because therapy shouldn’t stop when the session ends.

We offer both in-home and center-based early intervention services because no two families are alike. The right model depends on your child’s goals, your schedule, and which environment will drive the most progress.
In-home services bring therapy into your family’s natural environment. Your routines, your toys, your spaces. This makes it easier for kids to generalize what they learn, and it removes the transportation barrier entirely — a big deal for families juggling multiple children.
Our center-based services give your child access to specialized equipment, structured learning environments, and peer interaction. Fewer distractions for kids who need focused attention, plus group activities that build social skills. Honestly, many families do best with a hybrid — some sessions at home, some at our center. We’ll figure out the right combination together based on your child’s goals and your family’s reality.
The cost of early intervention services depends on the type and frequency of therapy your child needs, but multiple funding sources exist to keep services accessible for Modesto families regardless of income. We firmly believe cost should never stand between a child and the support they need.
California’s Early Start program covers early intervention at no cost for eligible families with children birth to 3. That includes evaluations, service coordination, and therapeutic services. We’re experienced Early Start providers and can walk you through the application process.
Many private insurance plans — including Medi-Cal — cover early intervention services when deemed medically necessary. We verify your benefits before starting and handle billing directly with your insurer. Sliding scale fees based on family income are available too. During your initial consultation, we lay out every funding option and help you understand what’s available. No surprises.
Early intervention during the birth-to-age-5 window significantly improves school readiness, giving children the foundational skills they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally once kindergarten arrives (NIH). Research shows that children who receive early intervention demonstrate better outcomes across multiple domains compared to those whose delays go unaddressed (NIH).
The brain develops faster in those first five years than at any other point. That’s not opinion — it’s biology (NIH). Studies indicate that early intervention during these periods can actually change developmental trajectories, helping children catch up to peers or minimize the impact of disabilities (NIH).
As your child approaches school age, we work with you and your local school district on a smooth transition. For kids in Early Start, we begin transition planning at age 2½ to prepare for school-based special education if needed. We coordinate directly with Modesto City Schools and other local districts, sharing assessments and recommendations. Evidence suggests that early intervention leads to long-term benefits well beyond preschool — including improved graduation rates and reduced need for special education services later (NIH).
GPS Counseling stands out among early intervention providers in Modesto because we pair clinical excellence with genuine compassion — full services delivered by experienced specialists who treat your family as true partners. We know the local systems inside and out and work seamlessly with Stanislaus County programs, schools, and community resources.

But we don’t just provide therapy to your child. We partner with your whole family. You know your child better than anyone, and intervention works best when it fits naturally into daily life. Early intervention isn’t just for young children. We also provide specialized early intervention programs for teens and young adults ages 14–25 experiencing early signs of mental health concerns, including early psychosis and other emerging behavioral health conditions. Early identification during adolescence and young adulthood can dramatically alter the course of these conditions.
Research indicates that intervening at the first signs of psychosis or other serious mental health concerns can reduce symptom severity, improve functioning, and increase the likelihood of recovery (NIH). Our specialized programs include thorough assessment, coordinated specialty care, individual and family therapy, medication management when appropriate, and support for education and employment goals.
Early intervention makes a real, measurable difference — and the sooner you start, the better. Contact GPS Counseling to schedule your initial consultation, or call us at (209) 758-7477. Let’s work together to give your child the foundation they need to thrive.
